Hunger and Health Coalition Fundraiser
Written by Dave Blanks - Tuesday, 19 October 2010 10:59 AM

The members of the Watauga Community Band and the staff at the Hunger and Health Coalition invite you to come to the band’s fall concert. The concert will be held in Rosen Concert Hall on the campus of Appalachian State University this Sunday, October, 24th at 3:00pm.

A suggested donation of 5$ is the cost of admission. All the proceeds will be given to the Hunger and Health Coalition.

Each month the organization serves an average of 750 families with food and clothing. The HHC also gives out 1000 prescriptions per month to those experiencing economic hardship.

Upcoming Volunteer Needs at The Children’s Playhouse

The Children’s Playhouse, a nonprofit children’s museum located about a 15 minute walk from Appalachian State University, has the following upcoming needs for volunteers. Directions to The Playhouse are included at the end of this message. If you can help with the special projects below, please contact Kathy Parham at 828-263-0011 or kathyparham@gmail.com.  Please provide a cell phone number where we can reach you.

If you are interested in helping with the day-to-day operations of The Playhouse (Playhouse Program Assistant below), you don’t need to call or email -- just stop by The Children’s Playhouse, fill out an application and sign up for times that fit your schedule.

Farm Heritage Day (Saturday, September 18th at The Old Cove Creek School in Sugar Grove).

We are looking for volunteers to help us staff a kids’ activity booth at this fair. The hours are from 9:30-4:00 pm, but we would be happy to have 2-4 volunteers do two-three hour shifts throughout the day.

Parents Night Out (5:15-8:45 pm on Fridays, September 24, November 12, November 19, and December 3)

5-8 volunteers needed to watch kids at The Children’s Playhouse while their parents enjoy a few hours out.

Playhouse Sale and Pumpkin Party (week of October 11-16, see specific times below)

We need lots of volunteers to help set up and staff our big sale at The National Guard Armory. Funds raised from this event help purchase supplies for The Playhouse and help us provide free memberships to low-income families. Volunteers are needed to sort donations, set-up, and run the sale. On Saturday volunteers are also needed to run booths with kids’ activities and help clean up after the event.

Volunteer Times for Playhouse Consignment Sale

6-10 volunteers are needed within these times but you can volunteer for shorter periods if need be. Folks with access to large vehicles are very helpful on Monday and Saturday to haul items to and from the sale.

Monday, October 11-Wednesday October 13: 9:30-4:00

Thursday October 14: 9:30 am-6 pm

Friday October 15: 8:30-4:00 pm

Saturday October 16: 8:30-4:00 pm

Playhouse Program Assistant

(During normal operating hours at The Children’s Playhouse. The Playhouse is open from 10-5 Tuesday-Friday and 10-3 on Saturday. Normally we can also use volunteer’s help about half an hour before we open and after we close.)

Program assistants help with the day-to-day running of The Playhouse by performing tasks such as planning, setting  up, and maintaining art projects; playing with children, offering support to parents and caregivers; sanitizing toys, and helping keep the play spaces clean, safe, and attractive.

Upgrade Our Outdoor Space

We are looking for a group of 5-15 people willing to help improve our outdoor play areas by doing tasks such as spreading mulch, whacking weeds, planting bulbs, painting a picnic table, and building two shade pergolas. Date and times to be determined based on the group’s schedule.

Directions to The Children’s Playhouse

We are located at 400 Tracy Circle, which is about a fifteen minute walk from campus.  We have parking lot entrances on both Tracy Circle and on King Street as we share the same lot with 381 E. King Street. From Earth Fare, for example, you just head East on King Street away from downtown, through the light at Hardin (by Green Mother Goods) and then up the hill. We are the last left into a driveway that you can make before the light for the 105 Extension. It is just after A.J.'s Service Station. It will look like just a little gray house on King Street, but if you turn into the driveway, we are the third building at the back of the lot. There is also a map on our website.

Thanks,

Kathy Parham

I wanted to share with you some information about the activities that will be going on around the state in recognition of the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance.  I really appreciate the work you’ve done to create projects to engage your community in remembering the significance of the day – especially those who have been able to program around the food security issue.

Governor Perdue is actively supporting the initiative and has recorded a video to encourage all North Carolinians to be involved.  You can watch the video here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuu2iELjxQw  You can also link to the video on your Facebook page or other social networking sites.

To give you an idea of what your peers have organized across the state, I’d like to share some of the information that I’ve received about the 9/11 projects.  If you would like to share your project information, please feel free to email us at NC@cns.gov.

Elizabeth City State University
VISTA members are engaged in a food drive to support Food Bank of the Albemarle (the food bank serving northeastern NC).  They met with food bank officials and obtained bins to collect non-perishable food items.  The bins have been placed at local businesses (i.e., Food Lion, Roses) and on the campus.  The VISTA members recruited University students to assist with the food drive and will also be staffing the booths from time to time.

Cumberland County RSVP – Fayetteville
The “Jaws and Paws Food Drive” is already underway at the Fayetteville Senior Center.  On September 11, Project Director Judy Dawkins and a team of RSVP volunteers will pick up all of the donated food and deliver it to the Second Harvest Food Bank.  This delivery is being coordinated in conjunction with Governor Bev Perdue’s visit to the food bank.  Pet food collected during the drive will be donated to a local animal shelter.

Wayne County FGP, RSVP & SCP -- Goldsboro
The three Senior Corps projects in Wayne County are working together on a drive to gather paper goods such as cups, napkins, plates and bowls for donation to the Community Soup Kitchen.  More than one hundred people are served at the soup kitchen each day.  The Criminal Justice Club of Wayne Community College is supporting the effort by providing boxes throughout the community and following up with pickup of goods and delivery to the soup kitchen when the drive is complete.

Harnett County RSVP – Lillington
Harnett County RSVP and North Carolina Campus Compact VISTA member Sara McCarthy have teamed up with Campbell University for “Eleven 4 Eleven” – a project to gather 11,000 pounds of food for 9/11.  The partnership, which includes local churches, 4H, the Harnett County school system, and senior centers, will donate food to the local food pantry, the Harnett Food Pantry.  The food drive will continue at the Campbell University football game on Saturday afternoon, and car dealerships are donating trucks for the food.

Thanks to all for these creative ideas and the work you do to engage volunteers every day.

Grassy Balds Habitat Management

Hi Folks,
It is that time of year again when the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) requests help with grassy balds management along the Appalachian Trail corridor on Roan Mountain.  Please let me know if you are interested in involving your group in hands-on habitat management this fall!

We are hoping to begin implement management in early September and the bulk of the work will occur in September.  We will focus efforts on mowing blackberry and re-sprouting shrubs using weed eaters and hand loppers.  Some cutting and swamping of larger woody vegetation will occur at a later date in fall.

This is a great opportunity for participants to hike one of the grandest sections of the Appalachian Trail, learn about high elevation ecology in the Southern Appalachians and landtrusts' role in protecting ecologically rich areas, and help enhance the viewshed along the A.T. corridor and maintain and restore a globally endangered community.

I can be reached at 423-741-2967 or nora_schubert1@hotmail.com.

Below you will find a general grassy balds work day description.  Let me know if you are interested in helping, and a work day that fits your group's schedule.

As of now, here are some available work day openings:
September 8-12, 17-23
October 18-23, 25, 28-31
November 1-13
